All Alteya Organics, Bulgaria Rose Valley Products

Alteya Organics is a family-owned company. Alteya Organics was born in 1999 but growing and caring for roses has been a family tradition for over a century, since the early 1900s. Our organic rose fields, shielded by the slopes of two majestic mountain ranges, are in the heart of the Bulgarian Rose Valley, the land of Thracian Kings and home to the world’s finest flower – the Bulgarian Rose.

We grow and harvest roses and lavender, and distill premium organic rose and lavender essential oils and flower waters using generations-old recipes. We also offer a wide range of organic plant extracts, oils and herbs from the eco-regions of the Balkan Mountain. After many years of extensive research, we enhanced our proprietary steam-distillation method that marries 400 years of tradition with science, to extract flower essences that are dermatology-grade and retain the therapeutic properties and synergy of the plants.

For years, Alteya’s scientific team has been researching ancient traditional recipes and the miracle effects of organic rose oil (rose otto) on skin. As a result, we were able to produce rare and limited rose Organic skin and body care based on old proven formulations enhanced to specifically meet the skincare needs of modern, eco-savvy people. It is based on an exclusive compound, our proprietary Bio-Damascena® Skin Reviving Complex – a combination of organic essential oils and extracts combined with Organic Rose Otto – designed to improve skins’ resistance to environmental factors and slow down the aging process.

Bulgarian Rose

Rosa Damascena, known as the Bulgarian rose, is a rose hybrid, derived from Rosa gallica and Rosa moschata.

The cultivation of the "Bulgarian rose" as Rosa × damascena has been developed since Roman times. It is cultivated for commercial use in an area in the vicinity of Kazanlak and Karlovo in Bulgaria called the "Valley of Roses". The distillate from these roses is called "Bulgarian rose oil" and "Bulgarian rose otto". Families still operate their own small distilleries and produce what is denominated "village oil".

South of the Stara Planina Mountain is the Valley of Roses. Unique to Bulgaria, it covers a huge area. The Rosa Damascena has been cultivated here for centuries and become one of the Bulgarias symbols. The famous rose oil of which Bulgaria is the worlds largest producer, is extracted industrially by distillation and widely used in the pharmaceutical and perfume industry.

Rose Valley, Bulgaria

The Rose Valley is a region in Bulgaria located just south of the Balkan Mountains and the eastern part of the lower Sredna Gora chain to the south. Geologically, it consists of two river valleys, those of the Stryama to the west and the Tundzha to the east.

The Rose Valley of Kazanlak stretches for 10-12 kilometers and is 95 kilometers long with an average height of 350 meters and an area of 1895 square kilometers.

Respectively, the Kalofer Valley of Roses covers an area of 1387 square kilometers with a length of 55 kilometers and 16 kilometers width.

The valley is famous for its rose-growing industry which have been cultivated there for centuries, and which produces close to half (1.7 tonnes) of the world's rose oil. The centre of the rose oil industry is Kazanlak, while other towns of importance include Karlovo, Sopot, Kalofer and Pavel banya. Each year, festivals are held celebrating roses and rose oil.

The picking season lasts from May to June. During this period, the area gives off a pleasant scent and is covered with multi-coloured flowers. The gathering process, traditionally a woman's task, requires great dexterity and patience. The flowers are carefully cut one by one and laid in willow-baskets which are then sent to the distilleries. Tourists are welcome to join the rose-picking process, usually on weekend mornings when special ritual reenactments are organized in villages around Kazanlak.

In September 2014 the European Commission approved Bulgarian rose oil (Bulgarian: Българско розово масло, romanized: Bulgarsko rozovo maslo) as a new Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
